Bethel Lutheran Church, Morton, IL
This congregation had been bursting at the seems for many years. The new facility is designed to accommodate their growth for the next decade. The dedicated worship room has platform space to accommodate both their traditional and contemporary styles of worship. BLDD Architects of Decatur, Illinois did the design work. PJ Hoerr of Normal, Illinois served as the construction company. Jordan Audio Consultants of Joplin, Missouri completed the necessary engineering and wrote the AV specifications for the acoustic treatment, audio reinforcement and video presentation systems. Thompson Electronics of Peoria, Illinois completed the AV contracting and built the systems. They did an excellent job.
Wesley United Methodist, Iola, KS
A complete audio and video system upgrade was ready to begin when a fire and 20,000 gallons of water caused hundreds of thousands of dollars damage to the 1920s building. After the clean up modifications were made to the project and even better solutions were created. Jordan Audio Consultants of Joplin, Missouri was hired to engineer and specify audio reinforcement and video presentation systems. Total Electronics Contracting of Joplin, Missouri assembled and built the systems with excellent results.
College Heights Church, Joplin, MO
1700 seats was a big jump for this local church. Their previous auditorium only accommodated 400. The larger space was needed for both the Sunday worship and week school assemblies. Jordan Audio Consultants of Joplin, Missouri completed the necessary engineering and wrote the AV specifications for the acoustic treatment, audio reinforcement and video presentation systems. The systems were built by the tech team of the church with guidance from JAC. The line arrays were sold and installed by Southwest AV of Springfield, Missouri. The systems went together smoothly and have been serving well for years.
First Christian Church, Parsons, KS
This sanctuary built in 1981 was still using the original technology with only minor additions and improvements. One massive problem was that the choir could not hear themselves singing. The first modification was to add hard surfaces behind the choir - the difference was astonishing. Jordan Audio Consultants was commissioned with engineering and specifying new audio and video systems. The systems were assembled and installed by Total Electronics Contracting of Joplin, Missouri. There work was outstanding.

Gary Jordan is a detail-oriented audio engineer with a keen eye on the “Big Picture. He has worked with media systems since 1978. His talents and passion turned into a full time career in 1992 with the founding of Jordan Audio Consultants. 28 years and hundreds of systems later, the training and experience has served churches and ministries in ten states. Gary also serves as the Technical Director ofr the International Conference on Missions (ICOM) - a gathering of Christians from around the world to promote global evangelism. Consulting
The system evaluation service includes a on-site visit with an interview, an inspection of the facility and the present systems, and a written report The interview is with the most appropriate people: system operators, music directors, ministers, building committee, etc. The purpose being to gather information about your programs, personality, and the worship styles of your congregation. The inspection covers all parts of the existing audio system and the room itself. Knowing your current state of affairs is necessary before proceeding any further. The report will address ideas for improvements in areas where a need has been identified. The goal is to allow you to see your choices for minimizing negative aspects and maximizing the positive. it also addresses the scope of work, budget concerns and costs for engineering and design work. These evaluation visits can also address acoustics, video systems and staging concerns.
Training
JAC offers on-site training classes for your volunteer system operators. 32 years is a long time for electronics. That is how old some parts of the AV system were. There were a few newer parts but they were budget pieces that would not last very long. Completely new systems were necessary (with the exception of a few microphones and a DVD player.) The main objection by the congregation was that the old projection screen hid the stained glass cross above the baptistery. Now with dual screens the opening above the baptistery is clear of any obstruction and the cross can be clearly viewed. Jordan Audio Consultants was hired to engineer and specify new audio and video systems, but the first real issue was the poor acoustics for the choir. They could not hear themselves singing. They had tried several different electronic solutions, but the problem was too much “softness” around the choir loft. Our solution was multi-faceted. They only choose to implement the oak panels installed behind the choir chairs. The new look and improved sound has created a very positive energy within the choir. The difference is like having several more voices. New high quality microphones were added for slight amplification but mostly for quality recordings. The congregation is thrilled with both the visual and aural results. In order to accomplish the overhaul of the video projection system, we placed dual screens lower on the rear platform wall and out to either side of the choir loft. (This required some lighting changes on the platform) A new control booth was built to match the woodwork in the sanctuary and placed on the main floor rather than the balcony. The main two-way overhead speaker array is custom built by Concert Systems of South Bend, Indiana. The array include a center box with dual 12” woofers and one 2” throat bi-radial horn with compression driver. Two additional 2” throat horn and drivers flank either side to provide even coverage to the entire seating plane. A complementary overhead speaker was built for a balcony fill and in contains a signal 12” woofer and one 2” throat horn and driver. Both groups of speakers are bi-amplified. A dual 15” sub woofer located in the upper level organ speaker chamber provide reinforcement for the lowest octaves of the musical spectrum. The amplifiers and system processing is also located in the organ speaker chamber. Three platform monitor systems were assembled. One using personal monitors for the pianist and organist. One using small pew back speakers installed in the choir loft. And on using movable floor monitors for use out on the platform. The system was built by Total Electronics Contracting of Joplin, Missouri.

As as space for organ and choir the acoustics needed to be lively but for a contemporary worship, the acoustics needed to be tame for all the percussive music to live comfortably. A significant amount of detail was placed upon the wall treatments and angles. The main audio system includes an array of two Concert Systems LDAC series speakers with 3 woofers and a single bi- radial horn a with a 2” throat compression driver. These custom speakers, along with the extensive acoustic treatments allow all styles of music to be amplified and complement the style without being either domineering nor blurred. A great deal of the electronics in the system were reused from the previous facility. (Perhaps 70 percent.) New amplifiers and processing was added for use with the new main reinforcement system. The existing amplifiers and processing were Crown and dbx, so the new amplifiers and processing are also Crown and dbx. The previous system had a single sub woofer in a smaller room. We were able to match this same speaker with a new second sub to accommodate the new larger space. The sub woofers are positioned behind grill fabric in the organ speaker chambers.. The video projection system is powerful and bold with a pair of 8000 lumen 1000:1 contrast ratio LCD projectors installed in the front lip of the balcony railing. A modest wall mounted control position is located on the rear wall of the space for when a single microphone is needed for simple events. When a worship team is assembled, parts from the touring system that is used for Sunday worship at the community auditorium are brought into the system and augment the permanent system. The main overhead audio system includes an array of four Community horn loaded three-way speakers. These speakers are bi-amplified. Input/Output panels on the rear wall allow for the addition of a 30” high platform when productions are staged. These panels include microphone inputs, Aviom network outputs, monitor output jacks and DMX lighting signal. The video projection system is a very simple and straight forward arrangement. A single 5500 lumen, LED projector was installed along with a large 16:9 ratio retractable electric screen. The extensive acoustic treatment plan includes PVC covered panels suspended in the bar joist ceiling and extensive wall treatments of Tectum material. The goal was to turn a large multipurpose rectangle into a musical worship space and still seem like a gymnasium. BLDD architects created the aesthetics of the panel arrangement. The previous system had a single sub woofer in a smaller room. We were able to match this same speaker with a new second sub to accommodate the new larger space. The sub woofers are positioned behind grill fabric in the organ speaker chambers.. The video projection system is powerful and bold with a pair of 8000 lumen 1000:1 contrast ratio LCD projectors installed in the front lip of the balcony railing. These projectors address a pair of permanent 16:9 ratio projector screens Our audio systems focus on intelligibility of the spoken word and the emotion of music expression. A fixed color camera provides a view of the chancel for viewing in the nurseries and kitchen. The systems were built by Thompson Electronics Company, Peoria, Illinois.

The Family Life Gymnasium has small stage space with modular platforms and a tech booth that can be closed off from the sports activities. The budget did not allow for all of the acoustical treatments, sound, video and stage lighting systems to be built. The specifications were reduced to just the main video projector and the main overhead speaker system and the floor level sub woofers. All other aspects of the system will be brought in temporarily when needed. The main audio system includes an array of four Electro Voice QRx speakers and a pair of custom built Concert Systems sub woofer speakers. These custom sub woofers were designed to fit beneath the modular platform and still produce chest thumping bass with four 1000 watt 12” woofers. The only parts of the acoustic treatment system to be applied were those elements that were normal parts of the construction materials. This was one of the longest projects in our 27 year history. It was over two years in the making. While completing the engineering and design work for the new audio and video systems, a fire in the balcony brought everything to a stand still. The fire department pumped 20,000 gallons of water into the rear corner of the balcony. The water proceeded to flood the balcony, the main floor and the basement. The entire building had to be restored (along with bringing everything up to present day codes.) The building was built in the 1920’s and had only cosmetic changes made over the years. Some of these changes had definitely given the facility a tired look. That was then, now it is a bold, fresh classic space that lends itself well to worship of the congregation. The fire turned into a blessing for the congregation. It allows them to refresh the appearance of the facility while making a few logical modifications. One major change in the sanctuary was to restore the tin ceiling that had been covered with acoustical tiles in the 1970’s. The 50 year old pipe organ had to be completely rebuilt and the old console replaced due to water damage. A new seating arrangement was also put into place for better traffic flow. The wiring for the audio and video systems were able to be hidden better in the walls and ceilings due to the reconstruction. Instead of surface mounted speakers, recessed speakers could be used. The results were remarkable. The audio system is very straight forward with an overhead speakers for the main seating area and ceiling speakers for the seats on the sides, both in the balcony and under balcony. A supplemental speaker is suspended for covering the balcony. The overhead speaker has dual 12” woofers and a 2” throat bi- radial horn with compression driver. The speakers were built by Concert Systems of South Bend, Indiana. They were painted gold to blend with the freshly painted tin ceiling. Monitor systems for musicians and the choir are included. Specialized microphones for the vocal choir, bell choir and piano allow for improved reinforcement and improved recordings. The AV control booth is built at the front of the balcony in the center of the room. The video system uses large flat panel televisions mounted on articulating arms to provide clear viewing to the whole congregation. The amount of ambient light and the inability to place a large projection screen without blocking the choir led to the decision to use monitors. The results are excellent. The systems were built by Total Electronics Contracting of Joplin, Missouri.

College Heights Church

The College Height Church had been meeting in two smaller rooms in their facility for over 10 years and had grown to the point of hosting five services every Sunday morning. The new worship center had been a dream for over seven years. The budget was tight but the need was great. A 1700 seat room has greater needs than a gym-a-torium or a chapel. This project was worth tackling since it is Gary Jordan’s home church. The building committee checked our references and directed the architectural firm to hire Jordan Audio Consultants to work the project for the acoustics, sound reinforcement, recording, video projection, video production, stage lighting, intercom and production logistics. In an effort to maximize the budget, the tech team at the church offered to build the systems with volunteer labor. This allowed us to save about $30,000 on labor expenses. Our tech team was blessed with 3 IT professionals, 2 professional audio technicians, 2 professional video technicians and a commercial electrician. This gave us an advantage especially with Gar on the team to make adjustments as we went along. The line array speakers were hung by a local AV contractor. We also hired a local independant engineer to assist with some of the intricate wiring. The acoustics were both calmed and redirected with strategically placed panels, hidden base traps and architectural diffusion panels. Some additional treatment, hidden in the negative space ceiling, have been added to address changes to the sheetrock that were made during construction. 1700 seats in a 180 degree fan shape presents its own challenges. 1000 seats are on the main floor with 700 chairs in the stadium seating. The negative space ceiling made possible the application of large line array speakers. Two arrays are all that were necessary to provide complete coverage to the entire seating plan. The speakers are the SLS model LS8800 with dual 8” woofers and a single 7” ribbon driver. The system has 72 microphone lines that feed a patch bay in the sound booth. The system has four monitor mixes from the main console and multiple stations of the Aviom personal monitor mixers feeding ear buds or powered floor wedges. The mixing console is a Soundcraft MH series 48 input. Various outboard effects processors and insert compressors support the active music ministry. The sub woofer system is quite unique. There are four sub enclosures. Two enclosures have dual 18” 1100 watt woofers. The other two enclosures have quad 12” 600 watt woofers. Each pair of woofers have separate output from the digital system processor. The dual 18 boxes are voiced for very deep tone (and earthquake effects.) The quad 12 boxes are voiced for punch. We worked out this idea with Concert Systems of South Bend, Indiana several years ago, but never had a client that would commit. This project is proof that the idea was sound and very effective. There are 3 amplifier racks that distribute the power to the various speaker arrangements. This was done to shorten the speaker cable lengths. Each sub woofer chamber has a blue amp rack which powers two sub woofers and one line array. Back stage in the tech room is a third amp rack that has amplifiers for floor monitors, extension speakers and front fills. A pair of electrical retractable 16’ x 9’ projection screen flank the stage opening. The DLP 5500 lumen projectors provide bold bright images for both lyrics and IMag.

JAC helped the church to address acoustics, sound reinforcement and video projection for the new auditorium. The church built their systems themselves with some coaching from Gary Jordan. The space is unique in that is it asymmetrical with an “odd” shaped platform. The whole effect draws you into the room as you enter from a side door. The chair arrangements can be easily changed to accommodate growth or just an extra large event.. Video projection is done with an extra bright projector since the plan was to have exposed window and LED house lighting on at all times. No screen is utilized, but the lyrics and sermon notes are presented as white words on a black (blank) background so they appear on the stage wall just a words without a boarder. (Fear not there is no finger of God involved.)
